What should my first lens be after the kit lens?

After the kit lens, the next lens to consider largely depends on the type of photography you want to pursue. Here are a few suggestions based on different types of photography:

  1. Portrait Photography: If you're interested in portrait photography, a prime lens with a wide aperture (low f-number) can create beautiful bokeh and shallow depth of field. Consider a 50mm or 85mm lens, such as the Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 STM or the Nikon AF-S FX NIKKOR 85mm f/1.8G.

  2. Landscape Photography: For landscape photography, you'll want a wide-angle lens to capture the expansive vistas. Consider a lens with a focal length of around 10-24mm, such as the Canon EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM or the Nikon AF-P DX NIKKOR 10-20mm f/4.5-5.6G VR.

  3. Macro Photography: For close-up photography of small subjects, a dedicated macro lens can capture incredible detail. Consider a lens with a 1:1 magnification ratio, such as the Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro USM or the Nikon AF-S VR Micro-NIKKOR 105mm f/2.8G IF-ED.

  4. Sports Photography: If you're interested in sports or action photography, a telephoto lens with a fast autofocus system can capture the action from a distance. Consider a lens with a focal length of around 70-200mm, such as the Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L IS USM or the Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 70-200mm f/4G ED VR.

Remember, choosing the right lens depends on your individual needs and preferences as a photographer, so take your time to research and choose the lens that will best fit your style and goals.
